South Florida Prison Guard Guilty of Inmate ID Thefts

Bernard Beliard pleads guilty to stealing inmate IDs to commit tax fraud

A former corrections officer at a South Florida state prison has pleaded guilty to stealing inmate identifying information for alleged use to commit tax fraud.

Bernard Beliard pleaded guilty Tuesday in Miami federal court to aggravated identity theft and access device fraud charges. The 27-year-old Beliard faces a maximum of 12 years in prison when he is sentenced in July.

Prosecutors say Beliard used his position at the South Florida Reception Center to gain access to lists containing personal information for 805 inmates from October until January. Beliard met four times with a confidential FBI informant who said he would buy the information for use in committing tax fraud.

Authorities say Beliard accepted $9,600 for the lists. He is no longer employed at the prison.
