Spirit Airlines Job Fair Attracts Thousands

Spirit Airlines hosted a job fair on for a variety of positions expected to open after the airline doubles its aircraft fleet.

The job fair started at 10:00 a.m. at the Hilton in Dania Beach near the airport but because of the turn out, it started earlier.

Spirit employees said they saw more than 2,000 applicants, and it was obvious if you were driving near the hotel between 10:00 a.m. to 6:00p.m. Traffic was backed up because so many job seekers came out.

Nona Jones from Miramar was excited to meet prospective employers in person.

"I've applied for hundreds of jobs on-line and haven't had one call back, so maybe getting my face out there and talking to people in person will help," Jones said."

Another woman came from Bonita Springs hoping to get a job at the ticket counter. She's been retired from the airline business for 10 years, but was looking to get back to work "because of the economy."

The Miramar-based carrier plans to increase its fleet to 68 from 35 aircraft in the next four years, creating many new job opportunities for pilots, flight attendants, mechanics and customer services representatives.
