Still Time for South Florida Tax Day Procrastinators

Fewer options as most local post offices not staying open late

Two days after the traditional deadline to submit taxes, there are fewer options for procrastinators in South Florida but still time.

Although the deadline to submit taxes is generally 11:59 p.m., all but one South Florida post office will be closing before midnight Tuesday.

The Miami Processing and Distribution Center, at 2200 Northwest 72nd Ave., will have two pickup times, at 9 p.m. and at midnight.

In Broward, the Fort Lauderdale Processing and Distribution Center, at 1900 W. Oakland Park Boulevard, will be open until 9, while the Pembroke Pines center, at 16000 Pines Boulevard, will stay open until 7:30.

Most Miami-Dade and Broward post office locations will close their doors between 5 and 7:30 p.m. Mail deposited at these locations by the scheduled closing will receive the all-important April 17 postmark.

Eric Munroe dropped off his return at the main post office in Miami early Tuesday.

"Last minute," he admitted. But he insists he has good reason: he owes between $3,000-$4,000 because he has few deductions and needed time to come up with the money, he said smiling.
