Lighning Strike Damages 2 Homes, Hail Reported in Hialeah

Pea-sized hail was reported in Hialeah on Friday and two Pembroke Pines homes were damaged from a lightning strike as thunderstorms rolled through the region.

The hail reportedly fell from 12:50 p.m. to 1 p.m., said meteorologist Evelyn Rivera. A photo of the hail is available here.

Meanwhile, Pembroke Pines Fire Department said they responded to 2060 NW 13th Street to investigate the smell of smoke inside a single family home. Authorities determined it was a lightning strike, which damaged the roof, electrical componenets and a window. A second home had a broken window and other minor damage.

National Weather Service meteorologist Evelyn Rivera said the rains in Miami-Dade and Broward were due to a tropical wave and sea breeze moving inland, when the wind changes to the east and moves inland and collides with the regular flow.

"You have this instability and humidity," she said.

Some flooding was reported in both counties.

As much as three inches of rain have fallen on Broward so far and it was expected to continue through Saturday, the weather service said.

Meanhile, Tropical Storm Ernesto continues to move through the Windward Islands Friday, moving into the Eastern Caribbean Friday night.  South Florida was not in the forecast cone at this time.
