Suspect Hospitalized in Police-Involved Shooting in Northwest Miami

A man was hospitalized following a police-involved shooting in northwest Miami Thursday morning, authorities said.

The incident began around 5 a.m. in the area of Northwest 79th Street and Northwest 6th Court when suspects wanted in a carjacking were spotted by officers, Miami-Dade Police officials said.

"We were able to locate a vehicle that fit the description of the vehicle in the armed carjacking," Miami-Dade Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said.

There was an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and officers. The suspect who was shot was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where his condition was unknown, police said.

Witnesses said the man shooting at the officers stopped the vehicle and was shot after he jumped out of the stolen car.

"They shot him in the leg," witness Michael Trout said.

No officers were injured. Two other suspects fled the scene and were on the loose, police said.

The incident caused Northwest 79th Street between Northwest 6th and Northwest 7th Avenues to be closed.

Traffic from I-95 southbound was allowed to exit at Northwest 81st Street but was being rerouted westbound on Northwest 81st Street. Northbound I-95 traffic may exit on Northwest 79th Street but is being rerouted eastbound on Northwest 79th Street and northbound on Northwest 6th Avenue.
