Authorities say police shot and killed an armed suspect inside a Homestead gas station late Thursday night.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. at the Chevron station at 801 N. Homestead Boulevard.

Miami-Dade Police Det. Javier Baez said a clerk observed the suspect being suspicious in the gas station and hit a silent panic alarm.

Homestead officers arrived and confronted the suspect. Shots were fired and the man, who was armed, was killed at the scene, Baez said.

Family members who came to the scene identified the victim as 16-year-old Danny Cruz.

"He was a good person, he would go to school everyday and I know my nephew wouldn't have done anything. I want to know why they shot him," aunt Yvonne Garcia said. "He would never have a gun, I know he wouldn't."

The suspect hasn't been identified by authorities, and Miami-Dade Police are investigating the shooting.
