The suspect in a Hialeah fruit stand armed robbery who was shot by another man was charged and booked into jail Wednesday night, police said.

Jason Arnoldo Bonilla, 19, is charged with armed robbery in the Tuesday afternoon incident at the fruit stand in the area of West 29th Lane and 72nd Street, Hialeah Police spokesman Eddie Rodriguez said.

According to Rodriguez, Bonilla approached the vendor, Luis Beltran Perez, and asked to buy a pineapple. He asked Perez if he had change for a $20 bill but when Perez started looking for change, Bonilla pulled out a handgun and tried to rob Perez, Rodriguez said.

But close by was 68-year-old Ivan Menendez, who has a concealed weapons permit and was carrying his .380 Ruger pistol, police said. When Bonilla pointed his gun at Menendez, Menendez opened fire, hitting Bonilla six times in the right cheek, neck, body and leg, police said.

Bonilla was taken to Ryder Trauma Center. Records showed he was booked into jail Wednesday evening and was being held without bond. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
