Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting that ended with a teen suspect hospitalized and a stolen Mercedes SUV in the side of a duplex in Sunrise Thursday.

The incident began around 1 a.m. when an officer from Lauderhill spotted the car driving erratically on Northwest 59th Avenue near Northwest 19th Street on the border of Lauderhill and Sunrise, Lauderhill Police spokesman Capt. Rick Rocco said.

According to police, the 16-year-old driver of the car made a U-turn on Northwest 59th Avenue, a dead-end street, and turned off the lights of the SUV to avoid being detected.

As the cop tried to stop the car, the driver accelerated towards the officer, who opened fire, striking the driver in the forearm, Rocco said.

The SUV came to a stop after it struck a vacant house nearby, Rocco said. The officer wasn't injured.

The suspect was taken to Broward General Hospital for treatment and later taken to the Sunrise Police Department.

Police say the teen admitted to stealing the car and driving towards the officer, and he was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, grand theft auto and no valid driver's license.

He was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

Detectives with the Lauderhill and Sunrise police departments are investigating the incident.
