Teens Charged as Adults in Hallandale Beach Slaying

Teen cousins charged with second-degree murder in stabbing death of man

The two teens arrested in the stabbing death of a man outside a Hallandale Beach auto parts store will be charged as adults, prosecutors said Thursday.

Jose Carlos Llano, 14, and his cousin Juan Xolo, 17, attended a hearing Thursday where they were charged with second-degree murder in the death of 32-year-old Gregory Hyppolite.

Hallandale Beach Police say the incident began in the early morning hours of Dec. 12 when the teens approached Hyppolite in the street and agreed to pay him $20 if he found them a prostitute. Hyppolite helped them find one, but the teens were turned away by the woman because they each had only $5, police said.

When the teens tried to pay Hyppolite with a laptop and he refused to accept it, they got into an argument outside the Advanced Auto Parts at 117 N. Federal Highway, police said.

Officers who arrived at the scene said the teens were standing over Hyppolite and ran away when they noticed police. Hyppolite was pronounced dead at the scene.

Under police questioning, Llano said his cousin used a pen and broken glass bottle to stab the man, according to a Hallandale Beach Police report. His cousin admitted he punched, kicked and stabbed Hyppolite with a pen, but denied using a broken bottle, the report said.

Hyppolite is listed in a police report as having lived “at large,” meaning he may have been homeless.

The two teens remain behind bars.
