As of 5 p.m., the depression had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph as it moved west at 12 mph about 80 miles east-northeast of Veracruz.
A tropical storm warning was in effect for the gulf coast of Mexico from Veracruz to Tampico as the depression was expected to become a tropical storm before making landfall, according to the NHC.
The center of the storm should cross the Mexican coast early Monday. The depression will have no impact on South Florida.
