Two Men Killed in Apparent Murder-Suicide in Fort Lauderdale

Police witness man shoot himself, find victim shot in head in apartment building

Two men were fatally shot in a Fort Lauderdale apartment building Wednesday morning in what police believe is a murder-suicide.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the lobby of Runaway Bay condominiums at 1625 Southeast 10th Avenue around 10:25 a.m.

As police arrived and approached the lobby, they saw a man shoot himself.  In the lobby, police found  another man dead in a chair. According to a preliminary investigation, a 36-year-old man was shot by 73-year-old Gene Schlanger, who is a resident of the complex, police said.

Schlanger shot himself as authorities were in the lobby.

Police say the victim may have known Schlanger, but that is still being investigated. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and Schlanger was pronounced dead at the Broward General Medical Center.

Schlanger worked for the City of Fort Lauderdale from 2006 to 2011. He had been economic development manager for the real estate division of the city, but he was laid off due to city reorganization, officials said.
