Vigil Held for Father and Young Daughter Who Died in Fiery Okeechobee Road Crash

Four people died in the crash that killed Arturo Javier Montenegro and his young daughter.

Mourners held a vigil Sunday for a father and young daughter who died in a fiery crash last week.

Arturo Javier Montenegro, 47, and his six-year-old daughter, who family members called Puchie, died Wednesday along with Miguel Remedio Gonzalez, 29, and Lazaro Remedio Palacio, 56. The four were traveling southbound on Okeechobee Road, west of Florida's Turnpike, when the car they were in was hit head-on by a BMW that veered into the southbound lane.

The BMW caught fire in the aftermath, and it was so badly charred that authorities didn't know if there could be more than one victim inside. The car was taken to the medical examiner's office for investigation.

Neighbors fondly remembered Montenegro and his daughter at the site of the crash Sunday afternoon.

"My heart definitely goes out to them," neighbor Adivinar Adnan said. "I can't really say anything else other than that, I mean it's absolutely tragic."

Those who knew them said Montenegro was always with his daughter. The night of the crash, they were going to a meeting at a Honduras Community Center.

After the roadside remembrance and prayer, a viewing was held at the Monique & Loriston Community Funeral Homes at 14990 West Dixie Highway in North Miami. A funeral mass wil be held Monday morning.
