Urban Flood Advisories for Eastern Broward, Northeastern Miami-Dade

Thunderstorms are slowly moving over those areas

Urban flood advisories are in effect for eastern Broward County and northeastern Miami-Dade County Monday night as thunderstorms slowly move over those areas, the National Weather Service said.

One advisory is in effect for eastern Broward until 10:45 p.m. A cluster of thunderstorms that has slowly been moving over eastern Broward has dumped between 2 to 4 inches of rain in just an hour, on top of the 3 to 5 inches of rain that fell in earlier afternoon storms, the weather service said.

The advisory includes the cities of Tamarac, Sunrise, Plantation, Fort Lauderdale and Davie.

As the storms move to the northwest, they could produce another 1 to 2 inches of rainfall, the weather service said.

A second advisory is in place for northeastern Broward until 11 p.m. for cities including Pompano Beach, Margate, Deerfield Beach and Coral Springs. Thunderstorms have produced 1 to 3 inches of rain in just an hour, following 2 to 4 inches of rain from earlier storms, the weather service said.

A third advisory is in effect for southeastern Broward and northeastern Miami-Dade until 11:45 p.m. One to 2 inches of rain had fallen during just half an hour in those areas, and heavy rain was expected for another couple of hours, the weather service said.

Drivers should be careful while driving and avoid flooded roads, the weather service said.

Florida Power & Light said that more than 1,100 of its South Florida customers are without power after Monday's rainstorms.

FPL spokesman Erik Hofmeyer said at 8 p.m. that 682 customers had no power in Miami-Dade County and 480 customers were without power in Broward County due to the weather.

Crews are working to restore power as soon as possible, he said.

Heavy rains poured down in western sections of Miami-Dade County and in Broward along Interstate 595 on Monday. It also rained heavily in Palm Beach County.

There will be an increased chance for thunderstorms in South Florida for the next few days as tropical moisture makes a quick return to the region.

Mostly cloudy skies will rule each afternoon as scattered storms may yield a few strong to severe storms late in the afternoon. On Tuesday,  it will be partly sunny with warm temperatures around 86 and scattered showers and thunderstorms. Wednesday will be partly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms and highs around 87.

Improving weather will come late week and towards the Memorial Day weekend as hot and mainly dry conditions settle in for Saturday and Sunday.
