A 5-year-old boy was killed in a violent head-on car crash in Homestead Monday morning.

According to Homestead Police spokesman Fernando Morales, the boy, Jason Santamaria, was being driven to school by his mother's aunt when they were involved in a crash on Campbell Drive near Southwest 152nd Avenue.

Police say another car clipped their vehicle, causing the woman to lose control and veer into oncoming traffic.

[MI] Young Boy Killed in Head-On Crash in Homestead
Five-year-old Jason Santamaria was killed in a car crash in Homestead Monday morning when the red Toyota his great-aunt was driving was clipped by a pickup truck on Campbell Drive near SW 152nd Avenue, then went across the median and slammed head-on into an oncoming Kia. Homestead Police Detective Fernando Morales said the seatbelt was over the child?s neck, but it should have been over his shoulder. "So the forces of the child going forward and the seatbelt around his neck possibly contributed to his death," he said. Traffic homicide investigator John Buchanan said it seems "pretty evident" that the boy died from a neck injury.

Santamaria was taken to Miami Children's Hospital, where he later died. His mother's aunt and the driver of another car were also hospitalized and are in critical condition, Morales said.

The young boy was sitting in the front seat with a seat belt, which police said may have been a factor in his death. He likely should have been in a child restraint seat in the rear of the vehicle, police said.

Police haven't identified the drivers involved in the crash.
