Pine Nuts Prove Problematic for Sisters

Pine nuts are popular in pasta and salads, but Maria McGuiness will never eat them again

A nut that we add to many of our favorite recipes could leave a bad taste in your mouth.

In fact, there's even a name for this annoying condition: pine mouth syndrome. Pine nuts are popular in pasta and salads, but Maria McGuiness of Miami Shores will never eat them again.

“Two days after I ate pine nuts," McGuiness said, "I was eating dinner and everything tasted bad.” This lasted several days.

So she Googled "bitter taste" and pine nuts popped up as a possibility. She told her sister, who said the same exact thing happened to her.

Ann Smith lives cross county in Palmetto Bay. Her pine nuts came from a different company and store, but her symptoms were the same as her sister's.

“The taste was very odd. It was almost like a dull bitter taste with a little bit of metal,” Ann said.

The problem with pine nuts seems to be more of an annoyance than anything else, but a recent report from a medical journal calls pine mouth “an emerging problem.”

The internet helped the sisters find some remedies: cinnamon gum, sparkling water, and baking soda toothpaste.

They've also contacted the FDA, and so have dozens of others trying to get to the bottom of pine mouth syndrome.
