4-Year-Old Boy Shoots Himself in the Head

Miami Gardens toddler may have accidentally shot himself: police

A 4-year-old boy is dead after he accidentally shot himself in the head inside his Miami Gardens home Monday night, police said and now a man has been charged in the death.

Jonathan Dortch, 21, has been charged with culpable negligence for leaving his gun out for the toddler to get a hold of. Dortch was visiting the house and is not a relative to the boy, police said.

Police responded to a home on the 20400 block of Northwest 43rd Place shortly after 7 p.m. after receiving a call of shots fired.

Officers found the toddler and had him transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital North, but it was too late and he was pronounced dead at around 8 p.m., police said.

Miami Gardens Police Captain Rafael Suarez said it appeared that the boy had shot himself, but police are still investigating the incident.

Suarez said six other people, including the boy's parents, were home at the time of the shooting. Police had been questioning the parents late last night.
