Police Question Man in 7-Year-Old's Shooting

Police have "person of interest" in Little Haiti deadly drive-by

Police are questioning a man in the shooting of a 7-year-old girl and an adult female after the car they were in was riddled with bullets Friday night in Little Haiti.

Police believe Israel Jean, 23, also known as "Zako," may have information on Friday's shooting which killed the young girl and left the woman critically wounded.

Police began questioning Jean late Sunday night, though he is not being considered a suspect.

On Friday, April 9th, two women and two children, ages 7 and 3, were sitting in a Gold Impala in the area of Northwest 1st Avenue and 64th Street when shots were fired into the car police say. The two other passengers were unscathed.

The 7-year-old, identified by relatives as Yahnya Ware, was shot through the back in the rear of the car.

Miami Police and Miami Fire Rescue responded to scene. Paramedics performed CPR and revived the 7-year-old girl, who was transported to the hospital but later died.

According to police, the adult woman injured during the shooting was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center where she remains in critical condition.

The family of the 7-year-old girl made a plea to the public Saturday, and yesterday they held a vigil in her honor.

Jean has a criminal record for aggravated assault, armed robbery, resisting officer with violence and possession of cocaine.
