Getting the news you are being deployed to a war zone has to be an emotional time for any soldier.
But Florida authorities said when emotions got the best of two soldiers on a dark road near Fort Pierce, a surprise visit to see their families for the last time turned tragic.
The Florida Highway Patrol says Joshua Thomas Baker and Jonathan Wendell Peterson, both on their way home to southwest Florida, were killed on a dark road in Fort Pierce on Saturday evening after the two got into an argument and pulled over to settle it.
The two men were going to be deployed to Iraq on Thursday.
The agency says the men parked their car on a grass median, stepped out and got into an altercation in the roadway. What the argument was about isn't known, but it wasn't worth it.
An approaching car wasn't able to swerve in time and struck the men. Baker was killed instantly. Peterson was taken to a hospital,
where he died.
