Being shot during a training exercise can't be a good sign for a would-be cop.
A Miami trainee was plugged in the arm by his experienced training officer on Virginia Key near the Miami Seaquarium on Friday, in what was an accidental initiation to what the rookie might have to deal with on the mean streets of Miami.
The officer was shot in the right shoulder and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police gave little details of what exactly happened or how the trainee ended up being a practice shooting dummy for his mentor, but it might be time for training officers to switch from live ammunition to rubber bullets. That's what they did in the Police Academy movies.
But the rookie might have learned several valuable lessons that could serve him well on the beat. Protect yourself at all times.
And move out of the way when someone has a loaded gun pointed at you.
