Elementary School Principal, Son Arrested for Smoking Weed

Principal Dr. Amanda Miles has been charged with drug possession

A Broward elementary school principal is in jail after police say her extracurricular activities included puffing the magic dragon.

Dr. Amanda Miles, 60, is the principal at Coral Park Elementary in Coral Springs. She was arrested Friday morning before she could make it to school after police searched her home and found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in her bedroom.

Miles' son, Michael, was also busted for pot, but his charges hint that he might have been a drug dealer. He is charged with possession of cannabis with the intent to deliver.

MIles is a 20-year employee of Broward Schools and has been the principal at three different elementary schools. She has been the head of Coral Park for almost four years.

Coral Park was recently awarded an "A+" grade by the state for academic achievement. That's a high honor, but Friday's arrest had nothing to do with students, police said.

It's unclear what led police to Miles' home, but the illegal findings were shocking.

Detectives found weed in plain view all over the master bedroom, including marijuana in a glass jar on the nightstand next to Miles' bed and a wooden pipe with fresh weed residue and rolling papers next to it.

When police asked where the marijuana came from, Miles said she did not wish to speak.

She's been charged with drug possession.

The Broward School Board has not commented on the arrest yet.
