A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was injured after a hit and run collision with a dump truck on I-95 in South Broward Friday morning.
The crash happened around 11 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 near Pembroke Rd., when the trooper's squad car was struck by the dump truck which fled from the scene.
Fire-Rescue crews worked for several minutes to try to free the 53-year-old Theodore Menner from his car, using the Jaws of Life to cut the doors and roof off the vehicle before taking him out on a stretcher.
Menner, a 20-year veteran of the force, was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital by Broward Sheriff's Office Fire-Rescue, where he is in serious condition.
An alert had been issued for the dump truck, described as a white 2000 Sterling dump truck with the license plate of N8946R.
The truck was found a short time later at Tamiami Trail and Southwest 47th Ave. in Miami and a man was taken into custody, the FHP said.
The driver, 56-year-old Robert Penas, was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and property damage.
A third car, a gray four-door sedan, was also involved in the crash. A passenger in that car was also transported to Memorial Regional.
The crash backed up southbound traffic on I-95 for several miles as officers investigated the crash.
