Family Feud Over Condo Led to Eviction Shooting

Joseph Richer shot and killed a man trying to evict him

The eviction that turned into a fatal shooting Monday at a South Beach condo building was not ordered by a mortgage company or the condo association.

It was ordered by the tenant's dad.

Joseph Richer, who allegedly shot and killed a maintenance worker who was changing the lock to his apartment, had been warned by his father, Charles, that the cops were coming to evict him because the son hadn't paid the mortgage or condo dues, the Miami Herald reported.

Charles Richer had bought his son's stake in the condo unit at Royal Atlantic Condominium and put it up for auction, where it sold last month.

The family feud turned fatal during the eviction and Alberto Gomez was shot after Joseph Richer emptied his .357 revolver at the door.

"His son had no visible means of support," family attorney M. Keith Marshall said. "He wasn't paying the condo association fee, he wasn't paying the mortgage, and he wasn't paying the taxes. And this had been going on for years."

The Miami Beach police officer who came with Alberto Gomez to evict Joseph Richer shot the armed tenant as movers scrambled to get out of the way of the gunfire.

No charges have been filed yet and Richer is still in the hospital.
