Hialeah Shooting Suspect Had MLB Blood Lines

Police say gunman killed girlfriend, three others, then turned gun on himself

A gunman who opened fire in a Hialeah restaurant, killing four people before he turned the gun on himself, was related to a former Major League baseball star and may have been close to a former Florida Marlins pitcher.

Gerardo Regalado, 38, is reportedly the half-brother of former Cuban National and New York Yankees pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez, reports the Miami Herald. The two had the same mother, the newspaper said.

El Duque is also the half-brother of former Florida Marlins pitcher and World Series hero Livan Hernandez, although it's unclear if Regalado and Livan knew each other.

"On behalf of the Hernandez family we would like to offer our deepest sympathy to all of the families involved in this terrible tragedy," Orlando Hernandez said in a released statement. "It is with great pain that we reach out to everyone affected and offer our prayers in this time of sorrow."

According to police, Regalado got into an argument with his girlfriend in the parking lot of  Yoyito Restaurant at 495 E. 49th Street just after 11 p.m.

The 38-year-old shot his girlfriend, identified as Liazan Molina, then stormed the restaurant and began shooting wildly at employees and customers, according to Hialeah police.

Police found Regalado dead from a gunshot wound a few blocks away in one of the victim's car.

Two female employees and another female were killed. Regalado was specifically targeting females, police said. Two males in the restaurant were uninjured.

The women killed included Molina, 24, Maysel Figueroa, 32, Lavina M. Fonseca, 47, and Zaida Castillo, 56.

Three more women were wounded and taken to Ryder Trauma Center. Mayra Delacaridad, 55, and Yasmine Dominguez are in critical condition, police said. Ivet Coronado Fernandez, 36, is in serious but stable condition.

After he'd finished his shooting spree, Regalado hopped into a car outside the restaurant and drove a few blocks away. His body was found a short time later, after the man committed suicide, police said.
