Rumor of Horse Slaughter Rears Ugly Head Again

Police find bloody van in Miami-Dade

The horse slaughtering appeared to have quieted down as authorities and politicians cracked down the horse meat trade.

But Wednesday proved illegal horse butchers are still in business in Miami-Dade County and the demand still might be great.

Police are investigating a found a bloody van filled with coolers of meat found in northwest Miami-Dade around noon. Police scoured the area looking for the horse the meat possibly was stripped from, but found nothing.

The meat is being inspected to see if it is indeed horse meat.

No arrests have been made, but the gruesome find has to concern local ranchers who lived the nightmare of horse slaughterings last year.

More than two dozen horses were killed for their meat by illegal butchers in 2009, and police believed the suspects were selling the meat on the black market.

Selling and harvesting horse meat for human consumption is illegal in the U.S., but its considered a delicacy to many foreigners. State officials made it even more difficult to possess horse meat during the legislative session.
