We Love You, Miami!

Residents attached to Magic City

In Miami, love is all you need.

While we may not always speak fondly of our fair city, a new poll shows that Miamians are growing ever more attached to their town.

The Soul of the Community study, conducted by Gallup, showed that Miamians were more attached to their community, compared to other large cities.

The study surveyed 400 locals, who said that despite our lousy economy we're attached to the Magic City, for better and worse.

"It turned out to be somewhat surprising to us, Dennis Scholl, Miami program director for the Knight Foundation, which helped fund the survey, told the Miami Herald. "I would have thought that people, because they were unhappy with their economic circumstance, would be unhappy with their community."

In fact, the bad economy may have even helped a bit. With less cash to use on pricey dinners and nights out, Miamians had time to stay at home with the ones they love, in the neighborhoods they love, according to at least one consultant.

"What's interesting this year in Miami is the perception of residents caring about each other is also significantly higher," Katherine Loflin, a Gallup consultant, told the Herald.

Respondents did say however that Miami's cultural offerings helped give residents a higher level of attachment.

Of the 26 communities surveyed, Miami's mean score of 3.62, increased from 3.42 last year, was higher than all the other communities overall, which topped out at 3.58. The two other big cities compared to Miami - Philadelphia and Detroit - averaged 3.37.

Of course, it might take all the love in the world to help Detroit.
