Jury Recommends Death Penalty for Baby Lollipops' Mom

Jury votes 7-5 to give Maria Cardona the death penalty

A jury panel has voted 7-5 to sentence Maria Cardona to death in what might be a climactic end to the infamous Baby Lollipops saga.

In July, Cardona, 49, was found guilty of killing her 3-year-old son 20 years ago. He was dubbed "Baby Lollipops" because when the baby's body was found, he had a lollipop on his bloody T-shirt.

Prosecutors claimed Cardona beat her son with a baseball bat and dumped his body outside her Miami Beach home. She was initially found guilty, but the Florida Supreme Court overturned the ruling in 2008.

Prosecutors took it to trial again and she was convicted this summer.

Now all that stands between Cardona and a date with a lethal injection is a Miami-Dade judge, who has to agree with the jury's recommendation.
