Two Northwest Miami-Dade schools were put on lockdown this morning after shots were fired at police in front of the schools.

Westview Elementary and Middle School are both open after a nearly five hour manhunt led to a lockdown at the buildings early this morning.

According to police, the incident began when cops responded at about 4:30 a.m. to a house near the schools for a domestic violence call.

The male suspect had fled in his car, but returned as the police arrived at the scene. When they caught up to the suspect, he reportedly opened fire on police.

Police helicopters and several officers on the ground spent nearly four and a half hours searching for the suspect as the schools were placed on lockdown.

Several square blocks around the scene, at NW 127th St. and 19th Ave., had been closed as cops swept the area. The suspect was finally found around 8:30 a.m.

Students had been redirected to nearby Henry Reeves Elementary School, but were later transported back to Westview by bus.
