Mama Mia! Another Drunk Mom Falls Asleep in Car

Homestead police find mom passed out with three kids in back of running car

Another South Florida mom passed out drunk in her car with the engine running and children sitting in the back seat, but thankfully this time, the kids stayed put.

Joanne Martinez, 24, was arrested Saturday and charged with child neglect after Homestead Police found her passed out in the middle seat of her Ford Expedition, with the engine running and three kids sitting behind her, according to a police report.

It's unknown how long Martinez and the kids were sitting in the car, which was parked at NW 11th St and 6th Ave, though police found the three children, ages four, six and seven, crying in the back seat and saying they were hungry, according to the report.

According to the report, Martinez reeked of alcohol and began vomiting as officers tried to ask her questions. It took police 30 minutes before they were able to get any usefull information from Martinez, who told them she had been at a family party drinking Patron and Tequila. She said she had pulled over because she was sleepy and had a headache, according to the police report.

The kids were released to their grandmother, who was called to the scene.

It was the second incident in the past month involving drunk moms in running cars.

A mom in Cooper City was charged with DUI and negligence after her 3-year-old and 4-year-old children were found wandering two miles from her home after she left them in the back of her running car while she sat passed out drunk behind the wheel.
