A Fort Lauderdale man is in jail after allegedly punching his newborn baby in the head, fracturing the infant's skull.

Mario Dean James, 36, is charged with aggravated child abuse for attacking his wife Tuesday morning and eventually landing a severe blow to his baby, according to police. He is also charged with domestic violence.

The domestic disturbance happened early this morning when James and his wife got into a heated argument that turned into a fight. His wife shoved James and went to pick up the baby, when James attacked with several punches.

The woman, who was not identified, tried to shield the two-week-old baby from the blows, but one got through and hit the baby in the head.

The baby was transported to Broward General Medical Center and doctors said the infant suffered a fractured skull and at least three different areas of the brain were bleeding. The hospital has not released the baby's condition.
