Miami Goes Bananas for Apple's New Gadget

SoBe shoppers line up overnight for iPhone 4G

Eager tech geeks camped out overnight outside the Apple store on Lincoln Road on Miami Beach for the first crack at the much-awaited iPhone 4G set for release Thursday morning.

The line of hundreds of hopeful customers snaked around outside the store with the help of barricades, as the groggy shoppers slept in lawn chairs or on the ground or sipped coffee to stay awake.

Many had been there since Wednesday night, and at least one man had come all the way from New York to avoid the even longer lines outside Manhattan Apple stores.

There were no guarantees that by the time the doors opened at 7 a.m., there would be enough phones for everyone. With a limited supply, most phones were reserved for those who had preordered weeks before.

As the line got longer, employees set out a sign telling shoppers that some of them would likely go home empty handed.

"Thank you for your interest in iPhone 4, however at this point we cannot guarantee you an iPhone," the sign read.

The new phone will go on sale at AT&T stores on June 29. It runs between $199 and $699 depending on the storage size and whether it's a new activation or not.

The newest model is thinner than older versions, its screen has a better resolution and its battery is supposed to live longer.

Best Buy, Radio Shack and WalMart will also be selling the phone in the next week or so.
