Officer Opens Fire on Armed Man in Strip Club

Man in critical condition after shooting inside notorious Miami strip club

A man is in critical condition after he was shot by a North Miami Beach police officer inside a notorious Miami strip club Wednesday night.

Police say officers went to the Take One Lounge at 333 Northeast 79th St. Wednesday night after they received a tip that Carlus Dewayne McKaufman, a suspect in an aggravated battery, was inside.

But once the officers were inside the club, they encountered an armed man who wasn't the person they were looking for. Police say when the man refused to put his gun down, they were forced to open fire.

"After a short dialogue and the subject refusing to obey lawful police commands, our officer, fearing for his life, discharged his firearm," said North Miami Beach Police spokesman Det. Armando Sotero.

The unidentified man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he's in critical condition.

A worker at the club, who didn't want her name used, said the man is a security guard at the club, but police haven't confirmed his identity.

Take One has a history of violence, including the shooting of former owner Robert Raley during a robbery as well as numerous other reported shootings.
