Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Fort Lauderdale

Engine failure on Delta flight as parts drop to Port Everglades

A Delta plane was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport Sunday after its engine began breaking apart.

Flight 1846, which was heading to Minneapolis, started to have problems shortly after takeoff at 7:45 a.m. and immediately returned to the airport.

It's unclear what caused the engine failure, but parts of it began to fall out and were scattered throughout Port Everglades.

None of the 140 passengers and crew were injured, though the incident had many shaken up.

"There was a big explosion, a flash," said passenger Kate Searls. "And then you hear this screech, the braking was so intense."

Everyone was able to catch a later flight and arrived in Minneapolis about three and a half hours late.

"When we stopped climbing, I knew something was wrong," said passenger Benjamin Jones Norman. "It was scary but everything was fine and it turned out ok."
