Man's Racist Threat Grounds Plane in Miami

Police: Man arrested after remarks before takeoff delay flight to Detroit

A man has been detained in Miami after he allegedly made inappropriate remarks on an airplane headed to Detroit.

Four passengers were taken off Northwest Airlines Flight 2485 by police, after the man, identified by police as Mansour Mohammad Asad, reportedly stood up and uttered a racist remark as the plane was about to takeoff.

"I'm a Palestinian and want to kill all the Jews," Asad said, according to a police report.

The plane immediately returned to the gate, where it was met by Miami-Dade police. Officers removed Asad from the plane, but apparently with a struggle, as he was tasered by police. He reportedly threatened officers, using racial references and chanting in a foreign language, likely Arabic.

"I'm not afraid of you cops, I've gotten in fights with cops in Ohio and broke their arms in three places," Asad said, according to an arrest affidavit. "I've broken skulls too!"

Asad's three traveling companions were also removed from the plane but released a short time later.

The 43-year-old Asad, from Toledo, Ohio, was charged with threats against a public servant, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence.

Asad's son, 27-year-old Mickey Asad, said his father suffered from bipolar disorder and was in and out of mental institutions when he was younger.

"He's far from a terrorist," said the younger Asad. "He just lost his temper. There's no excuse, but someone had to have pushed his button.

"This is such a strange turn," he added.

All 144 passengers had to exit the plane and reboard. The flight, which was scheduled to takeoff at 5:45 p.m., didn't get into Detroit until just before midnight.
