Teen in Boating Accident Doesn't Know Leg is Gone

14-year-old girl's leg had to be amputated after it was caught in a boat propeller

A teenager who had her leg amputated after a freak boating accident over the weekend doesn’t even know her leg is gone.

Gabby DeSouza had one of her legs nearly severed by a boat propeller as she tried to climb aboard a boat from the waters on Juno Beach on Saturday.

She has been in a coma since and doctors cut off part of her leg just below the knee earlier this week.

DeSouza, 14, has been in and out of consciousness, but hasn’t realized her leg is gone, family members told the Palm Beach Post.

“She doesn't know what's happened to her," said John Whalen, DeSouza’s uncle. “We don't know how she's going to respond."

The Palm Beach Gardens HIgh School student underwent more surgery Thursday and is still on a ventilator. Family said she responds to voices, but is still heavily sedated.

No charges have been filed in the boating accident, but the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Whalen said the family has hired a psychologist for the moment they break the news to the teen.
