It's been over a month since he was doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire by schoolmates in a dispute over a bike, but 15-year-old Michael Brewer and his family are still on the community's mind. Thousands turned out to a fundraiser for Michael in Pompano Beach yesterday, including Dolphins players, local politicians, Stanley C. Panther, Elvis, and Santa Claus himself, who arrived on a firetruck with sirens blaring.

Never mind that bringing Santa out before Thanksgiving makes everyone crazy -- the carnival-like event is estimated to have raised $50,000 toward Michael's hospital bills. "This is incredible," said his mother, Valerie Brewer. "I'm overwhelmed."

Dolphins QB Chad Pennington and a couple teammates showed up to Galuppi's Restaurant & Patio Bar and signed autographs with a pair of cheerleaders in tow. They found themselves in the middle of bounce houses, face painters, silent auctions, and raffles, not to mention a steady stream of well-wishers and supporters. Everything, including the space, was donated.

One very special contribution likely means as much to Michael's family as any: Boynton Beach-based AllianceCare committed to providing free home health care to their son when he is released from the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Burn Center.

Other middle-schoolers pitched in to help.

It's unknown when, exactly, that may be. Brewer has been hospitalized with 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 60% of his body since October 12, and only just spoke his first words since the incident last week (he requested money for a hamburger and milkshake). Meanwhile, three teens charged as adults with 2nd-degree murder in the case have plead not guilty.

A Facebook group has been started to keep the community informed of future fundraising events.
