Chief John Timoney will get nearly $200,000 for quitting

Miami's outgoing police chief will get a generous severance package as he leaves his post.
Chief John Timoney will collect about $185,000 in unspent vacation time, sick days and severance pay for leaving despite not having a contract with those stipulations, a source said Wednesday.
Earlier this month Timoney resigned his post amid rumors that he would likely be fired by incoming Mayor Tomas Regalado. In perfect symmetry, Timoney announced his resignation on the same day Regalado was sworn in.
Many wondered why Timoney seemed at peace with leaving the force that was his life for the past seven years. Now you know.
It’s not unusual for administrators to receive severance packages If they are let go, but usually it’s spelled out in a contract.
What makes Timoney’s possible pay day alarming is the city just battled with the police union to stop paying out large amounts banked sick time and vacation to save taxpayers money and save police officers from being laid off.
Miguel Exposito was sworn in as Miami’s new top cop earlier this week.
