UCF Student From Broward Killed in Murder-Suicide

21-year-old from Pembroke Pines killed near Orlando

A young University of Central Florida student from Broward County was killed in Orlando in what police are calling a murder suicide.

Jennifer Lynn Roqueta, 21, was found shot to death inside her apartment Saturday, hours after her boyfriend, Ryan Ray Scurlock, 24, killed himself at a nearby gun range.

Roqueta is from Pembroke Pines, police said. She had been dating Scurlock but the two had apparently broken up.

Police said Scurlock rented a handgun at the Gallery Gun Range, firing a few shots before turning the gun on himself.

While investigating Scurlock's suicide, police came upon Roqueta's body.

Scurlock's roommate, Stephan Lewis, said he tried to convince the man to turn himself in.

"He just said he had become a murderer and Jen was lying dead on the floor," Lewis told WESH. "I feel deeply sorry for Jen's parents and her sister and family and I give them my condolences."

Roqueta worked as a server at a nearby Buffalo Wild Wings when she wasn't attending classes at UCF.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with Jen's family and friends," read a statement from Sunshine Restaurant Corp., owner of the restaurant where Roqueta worked. "Jen was a wonderful, outgoing team member that will always be remembered in our hearts. Jen was a great asset to our organization and brought great joy to all who surrounded her, including our guests, team members, managers and friends. We will keep Jen's memory in our thoughts always."
