21-year-old Jared Paul Jones dies 10 days after Gables accident

A University of Miami Student who was struck in a hit-and-run in Coral Gables 10 days ago died early Tuesday, authorities said.

Jared Paul Jones, 21, died just after 2 a.m. at Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to Officer Kelly Dunham, with the Coral Gables Police Department.

Jones was hit by a vehicle headed northbound on Red Road as he was walking in the street near the intersection of Red Road and Blue Road around 7:20 p.m. on Nov. 13.

Jones was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital and was in a coma for a day after suffering massive head trauma.

"We are standing here before you asking for any help,'' said Jones' mother during a press conference last week. "It's the parents' worst nightmare to get the call we got last night."

The driver, who witnesses describe as an elderly man, left the scene of the accident. The vehicle's license plate contains the letters/numbers X64 and is described as a light blue or gray sedan, possibly an Oldsmobile.

Police said they "have been actively pursuing all leads and are confident in the progress of the investigation," said Dunham.

"The entire University of Miami community is saddened to learn today of the death of student Jared “Paul” Jones, 21, a junior majoring in English and originally from Glen Arms, Maryland, as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident off campus over a week ago," a statement from the University, released Tuesday, read. "The University extends its condolences to his family and many friends."
