Cuba-bound Woman Shot While Visiting Friend

Dania Dominguez of North Carolina was out walking with her friend's 5-year-old daughter

For a North Carolina woman, a planned visit to her dying mother in Cuba turned into a visit to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Somebody attacked Dania Dominguez outside her friend’s house near Hialeah about 9 p.m. Wednesday night.

“Dania was on the floor and the only thing she said is that she got shot,” said Lisset Paultre, who lives at the house. Earlier this week, Dominguez drove from Charlotte, North Carolina to Miami. Her plan was to fly to Cuba Thursday to visit her mother, who is dying from cancer.

But those plans changed when a vehicle pulled up as Dominguez was walking with Paultre’s five-year-old daughter near her house. The girl said a man jumped out, shot Dominguez in the back, then snatched her purse. He jumped back into the vehicle and took off. The girl said a woman was driving.

Paultre said Dominguez underwent about four hours of surgery to get the bullet out of her back. Paultre’s daughter was not seriously hurt.

Regardless, her mother is concerned not only for her friend’s wellbeing but also about what the young girl witnessed.

“She was not expecgting that,” said Paultre. “I never in my life expected something like this and she already has that experience on her."

Police are still looking for the suspects.
