Mother, Son Identified in North Lauderdale Shooting: BSO

A South Florida mother was killed and her son was transported to the hospital following a shooting early Monday at an apartment complex in North Lauderdale.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said the shooting occurred around 12:40 a.m. near the Lakeview Cove apartments, located in the 1100 block of Cove Lake Road.

35-year-old Candice McKinney was found dead at the scene and 18-year-old Kareem Barnett, McKinney's son, was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries, BSO said.

Neighbors told NBC 6 they heard 4-5 gunshots at the complex early in the morning. "It sounded like a machine broke, several times, then it stopped," one neighbor explained.

At some point, deputies were seen carrying a toddler from the home after the shooting.

"Nothing like that happens around here. I've been here four years. It's actually, like, a quiet neighborhood. I'm actually shocked to see something like that happen," another neighbor added.

"It's a huge jigsaw, almost a jigsaw you'd buy at a thrift store. There's a lot of pieces out on the table right now; they're sorting through them, they're trying to put them together, they're trying to see what's missing," BSO authorities said.

No arrests have been made.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
