1 Dead After Overnight Multi-Car Crash in Downtown Miami

One person was killed and several others injured in an early morning crash in downtown Miami Monday.

Officers responded to the scene at Northwest 3rd Avenue and 5th Street around 1 a.m. after reports that a BMW collided with a pickup truck.

Miami Fire Department Capt. Ignatius Carroll told reporters that multiple people were trapped inside the BMW when rescue crews arrived.

"Members of our hazardous material team as well as our team had to use extrication tools to remove two people from inside the BMW," Carroll said.

One person inside the BMW was declared dead at the scene, while four others were taken to Ryder Trauma Center. Both drivers were able to get out, with the BMW driver later being transported to Jackson Memorial for evaluation.

Three women and one man were hospitalized. Their conditions were unknown.

Miami Police continue to investigate the scene, which could leave the intersection closed for several hours.
