1 Dog Killed, 1 Rescued in Dania Beach House Fire

One dog was killed and another was rescued after a fire broke out a Dania Beach home Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the home in the 2600 block of Southwest 51st Street around 3 p.m. and found smoke pouring out, Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue officials said.

The fire was quickly extinguished but not before it caused extensive damage to the home.

The home's occupants were out of town at the time but two dogs were inside. A neighbor and an off-duty firefighter heard one dog barking inside.

The neighbor said he broke the window and the off-duty firefighter unlocked the door and they were able to get the dog out of the burning home.

"He put a plastic tarp over the window so he wouldn't get cut, he went in through the window, immediately unlocked that door," BSO Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said.

A second dog that was inside died in the fire, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
