1 Killed In Oakland Park Crash Between Car, Train

An elderly man was killed in a deadly collision between a car and an Amtrak train Friday afternoon in Oakland Park.

Officers responded to the scene shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Oakland Park Blvd. westbound, just to the west of I-95. There were 126 passengers on the train at the time of the crash.

Oakland Park Fire Rescue confirmed the driver of the car , 77-year-old Charles Stringfield, died at the scene. No passengers or crew members were injured.

Oakland Park Blvd. was closed in both directions, but reopened hours later. The Amtrak train resumed service around 2:45 p.m. The train travels from Miami and New York City daily.

Broward Sheriff's Office said as the train neared the railroad crossing, the crossing gates were in the down position. Stringfield's car had already stopped between the crossing gates and the stop bar. Police said as the train approached, Stringfield drove into its path and was struck.

Police are still investigating the accident.
