12 Mariners Rescued After Jumping Ship Near Haiti: USCG

The Coast Guard rescued 12 people who abandoned their sinking ship north of Haiti late Thursday.

The 212-foot cargo ship began taking on water due to severe weather caused by Hurricane Joaquin. A Coast Guard helicopter crew, as well as a good Samaritan vessel, responded to the scene.

All 12 mariners were located aboard a liferaft. They were transported to Great Inagua in the Bahamas with no major medical issues.

"The coordinated efforts between our Coast Guard crews and the AMVER crew allowed us to locate the individuals prior to the situation getting worse with weather still rampant from Hurricane Joaquins' wake," said Petty Officer 1st Class Joseph Medina in a statement.
