12-Year-Old Shot in Deerfield Beach Home

Police investigating shooting as boy left in critical condition

A 12-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was shot in the head at a neighbor's home in Deerfield Beach Monday night.

The shooting happened in the 600 block of Northwest 1st Way shortly before 7:30 p.m.

The boy, who lives across the street from the home where the shooting happened, was visiting a friend when one or possibly two gunshots were heard.

Police later identified the boy as Anthony Alejandre.

Alejandre was rushed by Deerfield Beach Fire-Rescue to North Broward Medical Center and later transferred to Broward General Medical Center where he was still in critical condition Tuesday morning.

How Alejandre was shot, where the gun came from and who had it and pulled the trigger are all questions police investigators are working to answer.

Broward Sheriff's spokesman Mike Jachles said police were interviewing a 17-year-old who was inside the home at the time of the shooting, as well as the mother and father of the 17-year-old. Two other kids, ages 8 and 10, were also inside the home at the time. Jachles said the father was outside doing yard work when the shot or shots rang out.

"That's the question, is to find out how this loaded gun got in the hands of either a 12-year-old or whomever and whose gun it was and who pulled the trigger," Mike Jachles.
