Man Wanted in Cop's Shooting Dies in Standoff

Police open fire on Miami Gardens man who shot cop in foot

A man wanted in the shooting of a Miami-Dade officer last week was shot and killed by police in Miami Gardens Tuesday morning.

Officers say they tracked down 24-year-old Durall Jessie Miller to a home in the 4400 block of Northwest 171st St. around 2:30 a.m. Police say they tried to negotiate with Miller, who refused to leave the home even as SWAT officers moved in.

"He refused to comply to these demands, Durall Miller then made threatening statements to our officers, telling them that he would shoot them with an AK-47 that he had," said Miami-Dade Police spokesperson Rosanna Cordero-Stutz. "At some point during that encounter, Durall Miller, at the doorway, reached down, in a threatening manner and our SRT officers were forced to shoot him."

Police had been looking for Miller after he was involved in a shootout with Miami-Dade police officers Friday night as they responded to a domestic violence call. Miller allegedly shot one of the officers in the foot in the exchange of gunfire, and was wanted on two counts of attempted murder of a police officer.

Relatives said they know what Miller did Friday night was wrong and that he planned to turn himself in peacefully.

"Now all of the sudden, I'm without a baby brother," said Miller's brother, who didn't want to give his name. "Y'all was wrong, y'all swore to my mother, y'all raised your right hand...you gave me your word that nothing would happen to him."

Police said Miller was a convicted felon with a long record, but family said he didn't have to be shot.

"They ain't give him a fair chance to surrender or nothing, 'cause all on their mind was to kill him," said another unnamed Miller brother.
