Lauderhill School Remains Closed After Dozens of Kids Fall Ill, 21 Hospitalized

What to Know

  • Lauderhill Fire Rescue officials said 29 children had symptoms and 19 were taken to local hospitals
  • Officials said it's possible the students became sick after having lunch

One day after more than two dozen children became sick at a Lauderhill school Monday, officials kept the doors shut Tuesday while an investigation continues into what caused the sickness.

The children became ill at Ave Marie Friends Preparatory School at 5801 Northwest 19th Street.

Lauderhill Fire Rescue officials said 29 children had symptoms and 21 were taken to local hospitals. Officials said it's possible the students became sick after having lunch. All of them ate the same lunch, which came from an outside vendor, officials said.

Officials said the students were experiencing nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Footage showed children on stretchers being placed in the back of ambulances.

Eight students were treated on scene.  "It was just a relief. I'm going to start crying," said one mother, who along with other parents, rushed to the preschool.

A Hazmat team responded to the school as a precaution, officials said. The food the children ate will be tested by the Florida Department of Health. Investigators have not identified the vendor that provided the food.

None of the adults in the building experienced any signs or symptoms.

NBC 6 tried to speak with preschool officials but they had no comment.
