Witnesses in Turnpike Shooting Take to Twitter

Professional athletes and witnesses tweet about gunman walking through cars on the Turnpike

Drivers who were stuck in traffic because of the shooting of two officers on the Florida Turnpike told the world about the unfolding events through Twitter.

Brett Hayes of the Miami Marlins was retweeted more than 50 times after he said he saw a gunman walk by his car.

@bretthayes9: Sitting in traffic on the turnpike and a man with a gun just walked by our car.. Not good,” he tweeted to his 3,700 followers.

Hayes gave more details before Friday's Marlins game.

“The guy walked right by our car and as he was walking we made eye contact with him," the catcher told reporters. "It’s one of those things where you’re like, I looked away nonchalantly, and I told my wife don’t look at him because he looked like he was obviously up to no good. Later I found out he had already shot two police officers.”

Former NFL player Twan Russell also tweeted from the scene:

@TwanRussell: No joking, a guy just ran inches by my car with a gun in his hand being chased by 10 police officers on turnpike. Traffic grid locked. WOW!” he wrote.

The incident happened between Pembroke Road and Hollywood Boulevard Thursday and left two South Florida officers wounded and the suspect dead. Both of the officers remained hospitalized Friday.

The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

Others complained about the traffic that was snarled for hours following the incident.

Viewer Hector Lopez also sent in footage from his phone of the gunman walking along the highway.
