Deal with E-ZPass in the works to allow Florida drivers to use SunPass out of state

    The Florida SunPass may soon work in states outside of Florida.

    The SunPass may soon work outside of Florida and in states like New York and New Jersey.

    Officials with Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise told the Miami Herald they are working out a deal that would allow Florida drivers to pay tolls electronically in states that utilize the E-ZPass – the largest electronic toll system in the world.

    The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority on Friday was giving away 1,000 free SunPass minis and an activation voucher with $15 of credits. The giveaway was part of Miami-Dade Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz's initiative called "14 Days of Neighborly Love." (Published Friday, Feb. 24, 2012)

    The E-ZPass works in 14 states, including New York and New Jersey.

    According to the newspaper, the deal would also allow drivers from those 14 states to use the E-ZPass in Florida.

    Both agencies, though, still have to figure out how to move the toll money between the two payment systems.

    A similar deal is also in the works with the state of Georgia, officials said.
