A South Florida man who authorities say was shot and wounded while striking a Broward Sheriff's deputy with a car is facing multiple charges.
Michael Mainolfi, 51, was booked into the Broward County Jail on aggravated battery and six other counts after being released from a hospital Wednesday night.
Mainolfi appeared in bond court with a bandage on his arm Thursday and was represented by a public defender. Judge Michael Davis ordered him held on more than $160,000 bond.
"These are extremely serious charges, I'm very concerned about the safety of the community," Davis said.
The public defender said Mainolfi was in fear for his life at the time of the incident.
Deputies said they came to arrest Mainolfi on previous charges Wednesday at a Lauderdale-by-the-Sea motel when he backed his car into a deputy's vehicle, striking the officer. The deputy then fired, hitting Mainolfi in his upper arm.
Authorities say Mainolfi drove away, but was apprehended at a Fort Lauderdale hospital.
